This home was built in 1879 and served as the home of Dr. William H. Kessler, a prominent dentist, who had offices in the Detroit Opera House Building.

In 1913, John W. Watling, who was in the business of municipal and corporation bonds, bought the house. He subsequently became president of Watling, Lerchen and Co.
