The house at 691 W. Canfield St. was once the home of noted Detroit portrait and landscape artist William B. Conley, who owned the original frame residence built there in 1871 and lived in it until 1892. The frame house was later demolished and replaced with the present brick residence around 1894-95. In later years, the home was occupied by a physician and a real estate broker with offices in downtown Detroit. The house is part of the West Canfield Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 27, 1971.
