Historic Detroit

Every building in Detroit has a story — we're here to share it

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Built in 1875 as a German Catholic church, this building saw its congregation evolve with the neighborhood’s shifting social and ethnic makeup.

Many of the original German parishioners moved away, and in 1936, Detroit’s first Black Catholic congregation, founded in 1911 as St. Peter Claver Church on Eliot and Beaubien, moved in and continues to worship here today.

More on this building coming soon.
