The Northwood House at 683 Trumbull Avenue was built for the Northwood family and designed by architect George F. Depew. Construction began in March 1890 and took about a year to complete, at a cost exceeding $13,500, approximately $480,000 in 2026 when adjusted for inflation. From 1891 to 1903, the house was home to William Northwood, his wife Charlotte, and their sons Frank B. and J. Albert Northwood. Originally from Chatham, Ontario, the Northwoods were prominent Detroit business figures. William Northwood was the founder, secretary, and treasurer of the Howard–Northwood Malt Manufacturing Company, later known as the American Malting Company.
The house was occupied from May 1903 through the early 1930s by the Sullivan family, another influential Detroit business dynasty. It later served as the Lutheran Settlement House before being taken over by Martin Luther Church in 1959. In 1972, Chris and Harriette Hunter purchased the property and began a long-term renovation that took several years to complete. By 2001, the house was operating as the Woodbridge Star Bed & Breakfast which is permanently closed as of 2025.
