Historic Detroit

Every building in Detroit has a story — we're here to share it

Mammoth Department Store

This 135,000-square-foot building opened as a Federal Department Store in 1949 on the busy intersection of Grand River Avenue and Greenfield Road. The store was designed by architect Charles N. Agree.

In the 1980s, it became the Kingsway Department Store and then, finally, the Mammoth Department Store in the 1990s.

Despite many of the other retail businesses at the intersection doing well, the Mammoth has been empty since 2000. New owners took over the building during COVID and had pleaded for more time to get the structure back online. The City refused, and demolition began on Aug. 11, 2025.

Demolition wrapped up that November. There are no plans for the land on this prominent intersection once demolition was completed.

More on this building coming soon.
