Historic Detroit

Every building in Detroit has a story — we're here to share it

Forest Arms

The Forest Arms Apartments, on the southwest corner of Second and Forest avenues, were completed in 1906. The building was designed by the firm Baxter & O'Dell for Joseph Smith.

In 2008, the building suffered a major fire, and demolition seemed all but certain. The top floors were exposed to Mother Nature for years, let alone the damage caused by the fire.

But it found a savior in Scott Lowell, who set out to do what so many said couldn't be done: bring it back from the dead. Renovation work began Nov. 14, 2013, on a $10 million renovation.

On May 1, 2016, the Forest Arms reopened as 70 apartments, ranging from studios to two-bedrooms. Shortly after reopening, the Midtown Detroit landmark was fully leased out.

More on this Midtown landmark coming soon.
