Historic Detroit

Every building in Detroit has a story — we're here to share it

Argonaut Building

The Argonaut Building was designed by Albert Kahn in 1928 and was the first home of General Motors’ design, engineering and research departments. It was built across the street from GM's world headquarters.

After a $145 million redevelopment (the equivalent of about $211 million in 2024, when adjusted for inflation), which finished in 2009, the building was renamed the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education. The 760,000-square-foot facility was donated by General Motors to the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in 2007.

More on this historic building in New Center coming soon.
