Alfonso Pelzer was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in the early 1890s. He worked as a furnaceman for W. H. Mullins, in Salem, Ohio. He returned to Germany late in his life and died there in 1904.

His first name is sometimes seen spelled as Alphonso, Alphonse and Alphonzo.
